Prostaglandins are hormone like compounds derived from essential fatty acid from prostaglandins synthase enzyme. They are produced by most nucleated cells except rbc. Unlike hormones which are produced by specific glands prostaglandins is produced by most organs. There are 10 of pgs which are involved in vasodilation and inflammation
from the essential fatty acids (EFAs). An intermediate arachidonic acid is created from diacylglycerol via phospholipase-A2, then brought to either the cyclooxygenase pathway or the lipoxygenase pathway. The cyclooxygenase pathway produces thromboxane, prostacyclin and prostaglandin .
