It helps in mixing up of food & also has d enzymes like like salivary amylase which helps in conversion of maltose to glucose & dextrin & also d lysozyme acts as d antibacterial enzyme…
Mainly it softens the food item for easy digestion.

Sliva of most mammals is free from enzymes and acts as a lubricant because it contains mucus. But in certain mammals like pigs, elephant’s and primates saliva contain an enzyme ptyalin (endoamylase) and this acts on simple links of amylase and amylopetin . As a result a series of maltose, maltriose, and dextrin molecules are formed .in nutshell saliva helps in digestion of starch (polysaccharide) because of enzyme ptyalin . the action of ptyalin generally stops in stomach because gastric acidity .
Saliva is a fluid secreted by salivary glands.This is the first digestive enzyme that acts on food.The saliva contains an enzyme called salivary amylase that breaks down starch which is a complex molecule to give sugar. The food is mixed thoroughly with saliva and moved around the mouth while chewing with the muscular tongue.
Saliva digests carbohydrates present in food in mouth itself, this process doesn’t occur in stomach b’cause the enzymes present in sliva(salivary amylase) are absent in stomach.
